The Silky Vincent Group put out four 7-inch singles during the mid-to-late 1970s before disbanding. Billy Pittman - a producer with an interesting resume that includes work with the Ohio Players - released the records through Hook Up Records aka Hook-Up Records.
In 2020 Tramp Records reissued all eight tracks from these singles on the collection The Silky Vincent Group: The Complete Hook-Up Recordings. It’s an enjoyable release with some excellent uptempo numbers. I especially like “Dance.”
Another standout from the collection is the beautifully solemn “Tomorrow.” The harmonizing of lead singer Louis “Silky” Vincent and the song’s background vocalists provides a stunning opening. The interplay between Vincent and the other featured singers continues at various degrees as the backing vocals almost function as another instrument. It makes for a unique and unforgettable listen.
The song addresses a passionate love that has run its course for reasons Vincent can’t quite figure out. He might not have the most technically impressive voice but he makes up for it with energy and emotion. I know certain songs will become an important part of my life as soon as I hear them. This is one such song. It’s probably in my top five discoveries that I’ve made while putting together Less Than 1,000 Spins.
“Tomorrow” has surpassed 1,000 plays since I first included it on Less Than 1,000 Spins. You can find it on the Spotify and YouTube versions of Formerly On Less Than 1,000 Spins.
