"Aslowgrind - Dub" by Sir Froderick
A haunting, vocal-sample-driven beauty from a beat scene veteran.
Less Than 1,000 Spins is a Micro-Chop side project, Spotify and YouTube playlist, daily newsletter, and a place to find great songs with less than 1,000 spins. You can support the project by sharing the newsletter, the playlists, and/or music from the playlists with other people.
Though perhaps not well known to the world at large, Sir Froderick’s name should be instantly recognizable to instrumental hip-hop enthusiasts. His memorable 2011 collaborative effort AfrikanDivas - which he co-produced with esteemed Grammy-award-winning producer Knxwledge - is a tribute to his late mother that exclusively samples celebrated Black women vocalists.
The following year he released an excellent joint effort with Ohbliv, another luminary from the beatmaker community.
In 2011 Sir Froderick also released his New Beat Bossa Nova EP. The track "Aslowgrind - Dub" was featured on the Less Than 1,000 Spins Spotify playlist. It recently broke 1,000 plays, so it has moved to the Formerly On Less Than 1,000 Spins.
I recommend sitting with all the projects and songs featured above. I also encourage you to check out this in-depth Sir Froderick interview penned by Jackson Diianni for Passion of the Weiss from 2024. And this 2017 live beat set with Smartbomb Oakland.
