In 1980 Seaquence released their lone album Mix Faze on San Diego’s short-lived Aidqueen Records. The record is an enticing blend of disco, funk, and soul. Three years prior they’d released the 45 “Disco Thing” / “Your Love,” with both songs later landing on their full-length effort.
The group disbanded and for many years their work languished in obscurity. A small but dedicated online following began to develop over the past decade or so, with YouTube curators uploading cuts from Mix Faze, 740 Discogs users adding the album to their want list, and pristine copies fetching in the neighborhood of $100.
In recent years the Switzerland-based label High Jazz reissued Sequence’s record. And in 2022 the excellent Edinburgh, Scotland-based reissue label Athens Of The North pressed up fresh copies of “Disco Thing” / “Your Love.”
“Disco Thing” is a-side worthy, but the b-side cut is the one that grabbed me when I first listened to Seaquence. “Your Love” is such an interesting track. It opens with deep, bassy vocals that interplay in a sort of call and response before moving into some serious falsetto harmonizing. The blend of styles - coupled with the song’s unique instrumentation and unexpected uptempo breakdown before the finale - borders on over-the-top. However, like many works of art that dare to be different, it ultimately works and provides a very satisfying slice of late-‘70s soul.
The song also caught the ear of Kenan Bell when he constructed his exclusive Less Than 1,000 Spins mix for me back in March. You can hear it at the end of his set around the 18:50 mark. Thanks to dedicated DJs and listeners like Bell, Seaquence’s music lives on decades after its initial release.
